'It's the first year in history more people are living in urban than in
rural areas of the earth'

I heard a speaker say this last night and couldn't get a verification.

Does anyone know a source (UN?) for a statement like this?

Thanks friends!

I'm not sure how this is relevant to a Christian newsgroup, so I will
keep my answer brief.

I work at the UN, and I think relevant documents may have passed
through my hands. *Perhaps* the speaker was referring to the UNDP's
"Human Development Report 2007/2008" (though, it is worth noting that
this was not released to the public until 27 November!). On page 246
of the report it claims that 48.6% of the World population lived in
urban areas in 2005, and it projects that in 2015 it will be 52.8%. I
saw no indication that 2007 is the year where the world crossed the
50% mark, however, and, also worth mentioning, the report itself
admits that it submitted to national definitions of city/urban/
metropolitan area, and those definitions differ from country to
country.

Thanks Denis: most helpful

What's all this to do with Christianity? Ask any mission-leader who's
doing strategic thinking (some of them are)...
