St Basil the Great preferred communal to solitary asceticism. 'If you
always live alone,' he asked, 'Whose feet will you wash?' And whenever
St. Ambrose baptized new Christians, he first washed their feet... Now
there's a couple of good ideas! Avagooddayeveryone!

Several months ago I attended a church retreat where we washed each
other's feet. People appeared reticent (myself included) at first, but
the mood was set by lowering the lights and lighting candles. I found
the simple act to be intimate, yet powerful!
